The movie Avatar connects to Native American history culture in many different ways.  In the movie the characters switch back and forth from there normal human body to a creature who is given human like traits.  The Native Americans used this a lot in there stories.  In the movie the characters also chose to defend there land just as the Natives would.  They lived off the land and fought for what was important to them.  Just as in real Native American history in the movie there were spiritual rituals and traditions that were important and strongly in forced.  Avatar is a great way to connect to the Native American Culture.
